Kedarnath Temple, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, stands as one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Perched at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) near the Mandakini River, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and a pivotal site in the Char Dham Yatra. The temple is accessible to pilgrims only between April (Akshaya Tritiya) and November (Kartik Purnima) due to extreme weather conditions.
Historical and Mythological Significance
According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas constructed the Kedarnath Temple to atone for their sins after the Kurukshetra war. It is believed that Lord Shiva, evading the Pandavas, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving behind his hump, which is worshipped in the temple. The present structure is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have renovated the temple in the 8th century
